About Us

THE COLLEGE OF MEDICINE AND ALLIED HEALTH SCIENCES (COMAHS):

The college which has its main campus a t Kossoh Tow n in Freetown, Sierra Leo ne h as t he honour of being the first medical school in Sierra Leone after it was founded o n t he 12th of April 19 88 , by the Government of Sierra Leone with support from the Nigerian Government and the World Health organization.

The College comprise s four faculties : the Fac ult y of Basic Medical Sci enc es, the Faculty of Clinical Sciences & Dentistry, the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery, and the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences. COMAHS has a primary mandate to produce doctors, nurses, pharma cists, biomedical scientists and laboratory technicians with a vie w of improving the healthcare delivery system in Sierra Leone . Hence, the College has strategically cemented its position as a leading institution in nation al health research and capacity strengthening in Sierra Leone by generating the much needed evidence to info rm policies and practice s in the area of health. The College is also involved in needs-based research activities a t both nation al an d international levels to ensure t hat it continues to play a key role in the health system as w ell as in rebuilding and strengthening the nation’s socioeconomic development at both national and international levels. The evaluation o f the Janssen-Janssen (J &J) and the Merck vac cines against the Ebola virus disease under the leadership of COMAHS in Sierra Leon e is o ne of the nob lest contribution s o f the college in improving the health system especially at the international level. The said vaccine s have received emergency authorization use from the World Health Organization, and were deployed to contain the Ebola outbreak s in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and more recently in Guinea, West Africa.
